Official Announcement: Manchester United Sign Bayern Munich Defender Matthijs de Ligt, Contracted Until June 2029 with a One-Year Extension Option

Manchester United is delighted to confirm that Matthijs de Ligt has joined the club, pending registration. The Dutch international has signed a contract with the club until June 2029, with the option to extend for an additional year. The 25-year-old de Ligt has won league titles with Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich.

The former Kopa Trophy and Golden Boy winner has made 324 club appearances and has 45 international caps. After signing, de Ligt said, "As soon as I heard that Manchester United wanted me, I was excited about the opportunity to take on a new challenge at such a historic club. During subsequent discussions, I was impressed by the vision that Manchester United’s management laid out and the role they see for me in it."

"Erik ten Hag shaped the early stages of my career, so he knows how to bring out the best in me, and I can’t wait to work with him again. I know what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and I’m determined to continue that record at this special club."

Manchester United’s Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, said: "Matthijs is an outstanding defender and a proven winner who will bring quality, experience, and leadership to our existing first-team squad. He has already achieved significant success in his career, and we believe his best years are still ahead of him. We look forward to helping him achieve success at Manchester United."

According to previous reports by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United will pay Bayern Munich €45 million as a transfer fee, with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons, to be paid in three installments.
